OUR LOCATION

Birkdale Farm is a working farm in a breathtaking location in the heart of the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). There is a wealth of information available on the Howardian Hills, North York Moors National Park and the Yorkshire Wolds websites including walking and cycling routes and local events:

We have also created a personalised list of links to our favourite and closest attractions and services to help you plan your trip:

Birkdale Farm is situated a mile and a half down a track from the pretty, well served village of Terrington. The farm compromises arable crops, sheep, and we have a Higher Level Environmental Stewardship agreement. The farm is particularly important as a key site for rare arable plants. Wildflowers and wildlife abound, including deer, hares, otters, barn owls and over 100 other species of birds. The farm is on a crossroads of public rights of way so opportunities for walking, cycling and riding start straight from the door! There are several promoted routes from Terrington village and Yorkshire Lavender, with spectacular views over the vale of York, sculpture garden, maze, garden centre and play areas is on the outskirts of the village so there’s ample to fill your days without even getting in the car!

If you do want to explore further then the Howardian Hills is nestled between the North York Moors in the North, the Yorkshire Wolds to the East and the historic city of York to the south. We are also less than an hour from the beautiful Yorkshire coast. A bit further afield are the Yorkshire Dales National Park, Nidderdale AONB, Harrogate and Ripon. The Howardian Hills AONB is an area of intrigue and surprise, with breath taking views and astonishing historical properties; Castle Howard is a mile and a half as the crow flies from the farm, the enchanting abbeys of Rievaulx, Byland and Fountains are close by and the National Trust’s Nunnington Hall is a short drive.

Malton is nine miles away and is becoming Yorkshire's food capital with a Food Lovers Festival at the end of May and vibrant monthly food markets. There is a very good shop in Terrington and an artisan bakeries in the neighbouring villages of Welburn and Hovingham. Local market towns are bustling with a terrific variety of cafes, independent shops, butchers and green grocers. The award winning Hovingham Village Market happens on the first Saturday of every month and showcases our local community.

PLACES TO VISIT

INFO TO HELP PLAN YOUR TRIP

For some reason Mondays in our local area are the local’s day of rest and many eateries and attractions (e.g. Nunnington Hall) are closed. For that reason, we have highlighted when things are open on Mondays so that you can better plan your stay.

If you wish to use our farm as a base to explore the wider local area you will need your own transport. The nearest railway station is at Malton (connections to York and Transpennine services); sadly there are no busses which regularly serve Terrington.
